Twice Tempted (Harlequin Intrigue, 547)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (January, 1900)
Author: Harper Allen
Average review score:

Action, Romance, Suspense--This Book Has It All
Almost two years ago, Harper Allen impressed with her wonderful first novel, "The Man That Got Away." Her second book, "Twice Tempted," is even better. This is one book no romantic suspense fan will want to miss out on.

Bounty hunter Annie Ryan met her match in jewel thief Liam "Lucky" Logan. Right when she thought she had him, the charming Lucky turned up the heat...and got away. The last thing she expected was for him to appear on her doorstep the next day. Or had he? FBI agent Matt Logan looked like his twin brother, but that was where the similarities ended. The by-the-book agent wanted to find Lucky, too, along with the priceless jewel he'd stolen. But that didn't stop the spunky Annie from getting under his skin, or him from under hers.

"Twice Tempted" is similar in style to the classic "Catspaw" books and should win fans of both those books and anyone who enjoyed "The Thomas Crown Affair" last summer. A caper full of surprises, Allen has more than one trick up her sleeve that will keep readers wondering how she's going to resolve it in the end. The sexual tension makes this one of the sexier Intrigues to come out recently. This is one steamy book! The Boston setting adds unique flavor, and the relationship between Annie and her family offers some moving moments. The book also has one of the best uses of cliffhangers at the ends of chapters that I've read recently. Almost every chapter ends with a surprise twist that sends the story in another direction and raises the odds. Pretty soon, the idea of reading "just one more chapter" has become meaningless, since the temptation to keep going on to find out what happens next is too great. It kept me up all night. I could not have been happier.

The only problem with the book is Harlequin's strange decision to run a letter from the editor on the second page like Silhouette does, instead of offering an author biography and backlist. I don't know why they want to copy what other lines do, but a list of previous books would be more handy for readers sure to be looking for Allen's other books. The year 2000 is not here yet. "Twice Tempted" is still a strong contender for the best 2000 Intrigue. I loved it.

UN Beso En Mi Mano/the Kissing Hand
Published in Hardcover by Child Welfare League of America (January, 2001)
Authors: Audrey Penn, Ruth E. Harper, and Nancy M. Leak
Average review score:

Sweet sharing in any language
I agree with Publisher's Weekly in giving this Spanish translation of The Kissing Hand a 5 star review. Connecting with our children is a number one priority, and this story does just that. Young Chester leaves the comfort of his home for school, but brings along his mother's love in the form of a kiss that warms his heart and soul. Chester returns this love by placing a kiss in his mother's palm, allowing her the same comfort. Chester feels safe and secure carrying this bit of reality shared by raccoon parents and cubs.

A Voice from Harper's Ferry, 1859
Published in Paperback by Ww Pub (January, 2000)
Author: Osborne P. Anderson
Average review score:

This Book Should Be In Every American History Class!
As a historian of the abolitionist period, and the raid at Harpers Ferry in particular, I strongly recommend the work of Osborn Perry Anderson. His work is the only surviving manuscript which gives the story from the perspective of the men who fought against slavery with John Brown -- not the confederacy or other biased versions. Anderson was also an African American, and thus further adds a missing perspective. I find it unacceptable to buy into the "academic" establishment's version of history in this regard, that Anderson, an African American, does not carry equal weight with the white writers of the time. If we acknowledge that racism was a bias in historical accounts, then Osborn Perry Anderson's account shares what it meant without the racist distortions, as he was part of a multiracial movement for emancipation. While the text covers some aspects of raid that may embarass some, the truth needs to be told. It should also be noted that Osborn Perry Anderson him self was given the special Sword that belonged to President George Washington, as one who would uplift the new nation of justice. Brown recognized him as a leader, and his leadership was well proven in his ability to escape at the end of the battle, and seek refuge in Canada. He saved the day with a more objective account, which was edited by Mary Shadd, and published in 1861. He seems to avoid mention of some details to protect comrades working against slavery, and their families. Finally, the book helps us to reflect on where we need to go from here, in order to achieve justice and equality. It is a great inspirational and yet factual book. It is excellent and highly recommended!

Superb book of God's Divine Balance, Practical Bible College
Walk in the Spirit by Michael Harper is simply "superb" and practical. It dierctly addresses many othe problems faced by Christians and Christianity today in a balance perspective. It deals and warns of errors of "extremes", and brings you back to the basics of the Gospel message and living as witnesses for Christ. It will quickly shake the cloak of religion from your shoulders, replacing it with the simple truths of the gospel and Spirit led life.

Who killed Lynne Harper?
Published in Unknown Binding by Optimum Pub. Co. ()
Author: Bill Trent
Average review score:

exellently written..well researched
this book is pretty much a biography of a boy who allegedly commited a crime and was found guilty and sentenced to life inprisonment. there seems to be enough reasonable doubt that he didn't commit the crime in which he served. It is based on the murder of lynne harper who's father was of enough rank that the police were pressured to find an easy answer for the crime that was committed. Lynne harper was found in a feild under a tree..raped and strangled by her own shirt and her clothes folded neatly beside her. now is this the actions of a teenager? There was a statement from steven that there was a car up by the road...what about that? I don't feel there was enough evidence to convict steven of the murder and rape of lynne harper.

Will Spring Be Early? or Will Spring Be Late? (Harper Trophy Book)
Published in Paperback by HarperTrophy (January, 1990)
Author: Crockett Johnson
Average review score:

Delightful story for Groundhog Day
This is another of Crockett Johnson's wonderful gems for younger readers. Groundhog appears from his burrow in the snowy meadow to look for his shadow and to make his annual prediction. All of the animals, except grouchy Pig, are thrilled with Groundhog's prediction, especially when Groundhog produces tangible evidence that spring has already arrived. When Pig attempts to eat the evidence and makes a prediction of his own, the results are hilarious. This book is out-of-print, but perhaps you'll be as lucky as we were to find a copy tucked away in our school library!
